MI has recently updated standards
covering the fundamental topics of
risk management and scheduling. P
The Standard for Risk Management in
Portfolios, Programs, and Projects is an
update and expansion of PMI’s popular
reference, the Practice Standard for Project
Risk Management.
Risk management addresses the fact that
certain events or conditions—whether
expected or unforeseeable during the
planning process—may occur. These can
lead to impacts on portfolio, program
and project objectives. The impacts can
be positive or negative, and may lead to
deviation from the intended objectives.
Risk management processes allow for
proactive planning, the goal of which is to
capture opportunities and limit threats.

This standard:
n Identifies the core principles of
risk management;
n Describes the fundamentals of risk
management and the environment in
which it is carried out;
n Defines the risk management life
cycle; and
n Applies risk management principles
to the portfolio, program and project
domains within the context of an
enterprise risk management approach.
