The Project Economy is upon us, Bob
Safian declared in a keynote.
“Projectization is moving through the
economy,” the former editor of Fast
Company told attendees. “I hear it
talked about in the halls of power in
companies around the world.”
Forget titles—the future of work will
be defined by tasks, he said. Tech-
nology is dismantling existing orga-
nizational structures, and younger
workers are looking at their careers
as a series of projects.
anadi Alsheikh was working
as the head of the project
management office (PMO)
at the Saudi Stock Exchange for a
decade before she was elevated to
the role of chief strategy officer
three years ago. Feeling a bit
removed from the day-to-day action,
she decided it was time to get back in
touch with her roots. So she traveled
from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia to attend
this year’s PMI® Global Conference in
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA.
“I still oversee the PMO, but my role
has gotten bigger, and my focus
has shifted more to strategy,” said
Ms. Alsheikh. “I wanted to refresh
my knowledge and see what’s
happening in the project
management world again.”
Ms. Alsheikh was one of more than
3,700 project and program professionals from across the globe who
descended upon PMI’s hometown to
learn and connect. The event was also
a celebration of PMI’s 50th anniversary, an opportunity to not just reflect
on the past—but to launch boldly into
a future that looks particularly well-suited to project managers.
