Despite this proven value of benefits
management, 83 percent of
organizations lack maturity with benefits
realization, according to Pulse research.
Benefits realization is especially
important during project execution,
when benefits can be derailed due
to changes in the business, resource
challenges or even external forces.
Those include sudden shifts in customer
demands, which no longer align with the
project’s original goals.
To better understand how organizations
are maintaining their focus on benefits
ou’ve probably heard the
expression “Keep your eyes
on the prize.” This is one way
of communicating the importance of
benefits realization, especially during the
execution of a project. The “prize” is the
envisioned strategic benefits to be gained
by the project and its deliverable.
More mature organizations have shifted
their understanding of project success
to a more strategic perspective. They
have gone beyond “on time, on budget
and in scope” to “on purpose.” To
do this, they have adopted benefits
realization management. PMI’s 2016
Pulse of the Profession® research showed
that organizations with high benefits
realization maturity waste 67 percent less
money invested in projects and programs
than those with low maturity.
