survey, recently completed by the PMI
Market Research Department, which
identified relationships between certain
practices and better project performance.
The “Pulse of the Profession” survey
tracked trends in the practice of project
management that may affect the profession and PMI. The survey questions were
organized into five categories:
■ Centralization of project management
within organizations;
■ Project management maturity;
■ Project scope and
success;
■ Project complexity; and
■ Corporate social
responsibility.
The survey was
sent to 1,691 PMI
members and credential holders who
are not trainers or
consultants, and
generated a good
21 percent response
rate. The margin of
error was ± 2. 4 per-
cent at a 95 percent confidence level.
The results of this survey, completed
in late 2008, provide significant insights
when compared with the results of an
identical survey in 2006.
More Successes
Since the 2006 survey, there has been a
significant increase in the percentage of
projects finishing on time (55 percent, up
from 53 percent in 2006) and within initial budget (58 percent, up from 55 percent). In the current survey, 65 percent of
